Ever have trouble finding just the right gift for someone? As a little girl and too young to have money, on her dad’s birthday my friend Bisserat used to run around the house and take things that belonged to her dad, wrap them up in whatever paper was available (magazine paper, newspaper, toilet paper…yes, really) and give them back to him. He would laugh, pretend to be surprised, then give her a heartfelt “thank you sweetheart!” as he gave her a big hug.
Well, especially today on Christmas day I find myself longing to give something special to my heavenly Father. But what can I possibly give Him? He owns everything. He gave the world His only Son. He gave me life. He created me with the gifts and abilities I possess. So while I think I am ‘serving’ Him or ‘giving’ Him my time, talent or treasure or even my life, I am really …. re-gifting. Like my friend, I am merely rewrapping what was His from the start. And just like Bisserat’s dad, I see pleasure on my Father’s face at my ‘attempts’ to give Him anything and hear Him say, “thank you sweetheart” followed by a hug that assures me of His absolute delight in being my Abba. My Daddy.
